The two series of classes developed by De Nieuwkomers for primary schools, aimed at creating process-oriented artistic experiences that connect to the different living elements on the playground. These series have taken place at different primary schools in Zeeland and Noord-Brabant.
One of the series revolved around the placement of a braided hedge. This is an ancient craft of creating a living fence that houses many life forms. The children would learn about the craft and the slow development of the ecosystem that it creates through experimenting with different artistic techniques. For example, when learning about photosynthesis and the growing speed of a tree, the kids created images using sunlight through the technique of cyanotypes.
The other series worked towards creating an insect hotel for the playground. Learning about the life of insects and playfully reimagining their habitats. In both series the children where challanged to experiment with different materials and concepts, rather than replicating exsisting artworks. the kids wrote poetry, painted abstract painting together with the trees, built nests for insects, explored different perspectives with camera lenses by zooming in or out, identified different smells of the playground and so much more.
